I recently read an article about the revolving door of drug rehab. After reading it I thought about how lucky a person is who only has to go through one drug treatment program.

Ten years ago, most of the people that needed drug treatment had only done (at the most) one or two program. I have spoken to many of these people. At this time I worked for an alternative drug treatment program and for the most part many clients calling in had tried one or two traditional programs (usually 28 day 12-step or outpatient) and later had relapsed and were looking for something different.

Now adays (10 years later) I work as a private counselor and speak to many clients who have done 5 or more drug treatment programs. I have had more than one person tell me that they have dropped over $100,000 in treatment costs for no result. And other clients to have spent 20 years trying to find the right type of treatment for themselves or a loved on.

The process can be exhausting and can literally drive a person strait down into apathy thinking they will have to go on living with addiction and that they will be an addict for the rest of their lives.

But the truth is that with the right treatment, it doesn't have to be that way. A person can get into a successful drug rehab program and actually overcome addiction.

Over eight years ago I struggled with an addiction to heroin. Unable to see that I needed help, my family stepped in to try to find me the right treatment program. My father, a school administrator, researched addiction and different types of drug rehab programs throughout the country.

My family didn't like the success rates with traditional treatment and did not believe in replacement drug therapy and so decided to go with an alternative drug treatment program.

I did have to travel to go into treatment and did not have a positive viewpoint about recovery or drug rehab in general. I actally thought it was a joke and that no one could get well through treatment.

Today, after more than 8 years the joke is on me. The treatment program that my family chose actually helped me. I am off drugs. I firmly believe in alternative drug treatment. It saved my life.
